Loikka 2015 welcomes 3D and 4K dance films

For its 2015 open call, Loikka dance film festival again welcomes submissions in two special technical categories: Stereoscopic 3D films and dance films available for screening at 4K resolution. Films in these two categories are also exempt from the festival entry fee.

Note: The screenings of 3D and 4K films at Loikka 2015 will be contingent on the artistic level, technical quality and sufficient number of submissions in these formats. We look forward to being able to again showcase some films in these categories in a state-of the art cinema in Helsinki, but this is entirely dependent on us having enough great content for full-length screenings. It’s up to you, so send in your work and make it happen!

Stereoscopic 3D films

At Loikka, we firmly believe that the recent renaissance of 3D cinema has huge implications for dance. At its core, dance is an art form based on the presence in space of a moving body, and stereoscopic 3D opens up (literally) a vast new depth of expression in conveying this physical and emotional essence.

To provide a platform to support this ongoing pioneer work, Loikka invites 3D open call submissions encompassing any genre, style or form of dance. The technical specifications are as follows:

Preview screening media

– Separate Left and Right media files sent via file transfer to [email protected] or on hard disk / memory stick to the festival office. See the Sending your 3D and 4K Preview Materials page for the mailing address.
– File format: Any standard file format and codec is OK (Quicktime MOV, Prores 422, high-quality H.264 etc.)
– Max resolution: HD 1920 x 1080

Final screening media

– Note that the only final screening format for 3D films at Loikka 2015 will be 3D DCP. So if you’re submitting a 3D dance film, make sure you can deliver it in this format.
Very important: Our 3D films will be screened on a full-size cinema screen, so your stereoscopic realization must be compatible with this viewing environment. The maximum positive parallax value is 1 %.
– If your film is selected, your DCP’s need to be delivered on hard disk by November 30th 2014. See the Sending your 3D and 4K Preview Materials page for the mailing address.
– If you’re sending your preview screener on hard disk, feel free to include the DCP as well – that will save a lot of work if and when your film is selected!

For any questions related to 3D films at Loikka, feel free to e-mail coordinator Thomas Freundlich at [email protected].

4K dance films

Digital motion imaging has advanced by giant leaps over the last years. Cameras capturing at resolutions of 4K (4,000 pixels wide) and beyond have become the norm rather than the exception in cinema production. However, the adaptation of corresponding display and screening technology has not progressed at the same rate. All but a handful of cinemas worldwide have the capacity to screen at resolutions exceeding 2K (2,000 pixels wide), and ultra-high-definition screens, while making headway in the consumer market, are still held back by the need for high-quality 4K content.

For its 2015 open call, Loikka festival again invites filmmakers worldwide to submit dance films that have been shot at 4K or beyond, with an opportunity to showcase their work in its full visual impact to an enthusiastic international audience. We welcome dance films of any length, and of any genre style or form. Technical specifications notwithstanding, as with all our programming, we’re looking for works that combine great movement with cinematic and visual skill and creativity. 4K submissions for Loikka 2015 are exempt from the festival entry fee.

For the technical category of 4K films, we are looking for work captured primarily at a resolution of 4K or beyond (3840 x 2160 or above), and mastered at 4K. If your project includes some footage captured at a lower resolution, that’s fine, as long as the end result holds up when screened at 4K DCI resolution.

Preview screening media

– Full-resolution media file sent via file transfer to [email protected] or on hard disk / memory stick to the festival office. See the Sending your 3D and 4K Preview Materials page for the mailing address.
– File format: Any standard file format and codec is OK (Quicktime MOV, Prores 422, high-quality H.264 etc.)

Final screening media

– Note that the only final screening format for 4K films at Loikka 2015 will be 4K DCP. So if you’re submitting a 4K dance film, make sure you can deliver it in this format.
– If your film is selected, your 4K DCP needs to be delivered on hard disk by November 30th, 2014. See the Sending your 3D and 4K Preview Materials page for the mailing address.
– If you’re sending your preview screener on hard disk, feel free to include the DCP as well – that will save a lot of work if and when your film is selected!

Our aim is to host our 4K screenings at a high-end cinema with the required projection capability in Helsinki. However, the screening(s) will be dependent on whether we receive a sufficient amount of suitable submissions. Details and updates will be available once the open call closes and the film selections have been completed.

Looking forward to your work! For any questions related to our 4K selections, please e-mail festival coordinator Thomas Freundlich at [email protected].
