Liput 10/5 € (Vain käteinen)
Kansalaisraati ja ekstrat
Loikka antoi ikäihmisille mahdollisuuden valita tanssielokuvanäytöksen 2013 festivaalille. Kansalaisraadin jäsenet valikoituivat Kinaporin vanhusten palvelu keskuksen aktiivisista asiakkaista. Tanssitaiteilijat Kati Kallio ja Elli Isokoski (Myrskyryhmä) kokoontuivat yhdeksän raatilaisen kera katsomaan, arvioimaan ja keskustelemaan tanssielokuvista. Elokuvanäytöksen pituudeksi tuli 60 min. Joensuussa nähtävässä näytöksessä on mukana myös muutama ekstra elokuva osoittamaan tanssielokuvan moninaisuutta. Kokonaisnäytöksen on kuratoinut Kati Kallio.

]]>This experimental laboratory brings together film-makers, choreographers and dancers into teams that are given challenging creative tasks. The laboratory functions as a collective think tank that aims to develop and urge participants forward from one experiment to the next, bringing experiments to life and rejoicing: “It’s alive!”
Choreographers and dancers have the opportunity to experience the liberating possibilities of working with camera, editing and film. Film makers will have access to exploring the movement language and narrative possibilities of the body through the work of the choreographers and dancers.
The laboratory does not follow a traditional workshop set-up where there are teachers and students, it functions more like an experiment where the whole laboratory group supports each other. The aim is to engage in collective experimentation and making with the guidance of choreographer Kati Kallio and director Jukka Rajala-Granstubb.

]]>As one of Finland’s key annual events in the field of contemporary dance, LOIKKA presents a wide range of international and Finnish dance short films as well as dance documentaries. LOIKKA is organized by the open production and artists’ collective MAD Production.
With all-time record audiences, this year’s festival received great feedback for its excellent programming and innovative curation. The Audience Prize of the festival was awarded to the short film Sleeping Patterns, directed by Hanna Lappalainen.
The festival also saw the announcement of its new artistic directors. Thomas Freundlich and Valtteri Raekallio are among the front rank of Finland’s dance film practitioners. Mr. Freundlich and Raekallio are long-term artistic collaborators whose previous film work includes North Horizon, seen at 18 film and dance festivals around the world. In 2004, Raekallio and Freundlich founded Liikekieli.com, Finland’s online magazine for dance. Liikekieli.com subsequently received the 2008 Finnish State Award for Dance Arts, Finland’s highest commendation in dance.
“I have been delighted by the strong growth and great atmosphere of LOIKKA over the last years,” said Hanna Pajala-Assefa, founder and previous artistic director of LOIKKA festival. “I am happy to hand over this vibrant and well-established event to my successors, and I’m certain they will continue to bring together audiences and artists in the realm of dance film.”
“Dance film is in a period of tremendous growth and diversification both in Finland and worldwide. Heading LOIKKA festival is an exciting opportunity, and we look forward to both continuing the excellent work done by Hanna Pajala-Assefa, as well as exploring new avenues for the festival’s programming, including 3D dance film,” said Thomas Freundlich and Valtteri Raekallio.
The open call for the LOIKKA 2013 festival will open in August 2012.
About Loikka
LOIKKA is Finland’s only dance film festival, organized annually since 2008. The event is organized by the open production and artists’ collective MAD Production. The main partners and supporters of the festival include the national and regional arts councils of Finland, the Kone Foundation, the City of Helsinki Cultural Office, the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture in Finland (AVEK), the British Council and the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.
About the artistic directors
Thomas Freundlich and Valtteri Raekallio are among the new generation of contemporary dance artists in Finland. They are, between them, the recipients of some 40 grants, awards and prizes from Finnish and international arts councils, foundations and festivals. Choreographer, dancer and filmmaker Thomas Freundlich (b. 1975) has created nearly 30 contemporary choreographies both in Finland and internationally, encompassing solos, group works, opera, theatre and dance film. From 2011 to 2013, he is the recipient of a three-year artists’ grant from the Arts Council of Finland. Dancer Valtteri Raekallio (b. 1982) has performed with leading Finnish and international choreographers in over 30 countries. Currently a member of Helsinki Dance Company, he is also an accomplished dance photographer whose work has been seen in many international dance publications.

“Over the last five years, LOIKKA has focused on raising the visibility and esteem of dance film as an art form in Finland. This work has clearly paid off, as this year we received an unprecedented 130 short film submissions for our open call. A record number of Finnish films were also selected for screening this year. The festival selections can be characterized as even more open-minded and experimental than ever before,” says Hanna Pajala-Assefa, Artistic Director of the festival. LOIKKA also pays homage to dance film with its first ever audience prize, the winner of which will be announced at the LOIKKAA! festival club.
In addition to international works, the festival’s short film selections present 14 Finnish dance films. The Quality Goods and Crazy Cool selections have been curated by a jury of dance and film professionals that comprises Hanna Pajala-Assefa, Beniamino Borghi, Anna Nykyri, Mika Kurvinen, Sari Palmgren and Lulu Salmi. For the first time, LOIKKA also presents a selection titled Eazy Access, curated by a so-called citizen jury. Compiled in cooperation with The Helsinki Clubhouse for mental illness rehabilitation, this screening of eight short films embraces the full range of styles and genres in dance film.
In addition to five programmes of high-quality short films, LOIKKA’s screenings include strong artist documentaries on acclaimed choreographer-dancers Wayne McGregor and Akram Khan. The festival also gives the widely acclaimed film Pina 3D one more screening in Finland. LOIKKA’s offering for dance and film professionals includes the Encounters seminar on the artistic processes of short films, as well as the collaborative, improvisatory Dance Video Jam session. In addition, the festival programme encompasses club evenings and free events for the general public and professionals alike.
