Loikka dance film festival announces two recognition awards for the 2014 festival edition. The Loikka Audience Award is decided by the festival viewers, while the Loikka Team Production Prize is a non-financial production grant with the aim of enabling or supporting the creation of a new dance film during 2014. The winner of the Loikka Team Production Prize will receive free access for one weekend to a dedicated volunteer crew as well as a full Digital Cinema camera package. (For practical reasons, the prize is open to filmmakers based or working in Finland.)

The call for entries for the Breaking 8 International Video Dance Contest and Festival is open until September 15th, 2013. The event is part of the Festival Internazionale Nuova Danza – FIND 31, which will take place in Cagliari, Italy, from October 21st to December 8th, 2013.

Breaking 8 is a one of Loikka’s international partner festivals. The winning work from the competition will be screened at the 2014 Loikka festival, held in Helsinki, Finland April 3rd to 6th 2014. A screening of dance films from Loikka will also be presented as part of the 2013 Breaking 8 programme.

The open call for the 2014 Loikka dance film festival is now open. The deadline for film applications is September 30th, 2013.

Loikka strives to constantly push not only the artistic frontiers, but also the technical state of the art of dance film. Alongside our normal programming, we accept open call submissions for stereoscopic 3D dance films. In addition, for the first time ever, Loikka now accepts submissions for films that can be screened at 4K resolution.

The focus of the dance film laboratory is on creativity and research. All participants are equal and work together exploring and experimenting with the merging of film and dance.

This experimental laboratory brings together film-makers, choreographers and dancers into teams that are given challenging creative tasks. The laboratory functions as a collective think tank that aims to develop and urge participants forward from one experiment to the next, bringing experiments to life and rejoicing: “It’s alive!”

Choreographers and dancers have the opportunity to experience the liberating possibilities of working with camera, editing and film. Film makers will have access to exploring the movement language and narrative possibilities of the body through the work of the choreographers and dancers.

The laboratory does not follow a traditional workshop set-up where there are teachers and students, it functions more like an experiment where the whole laboratory group supports each other. The aim is to engage in collective experimentation and making with the guidance of choreographer Kati Kallio and director Jukka Rajala-Granstubb.

Participants are required to submit a movement or filmatic idea on the theme HASTE.

Luomis- ja tutkimustyöhön keskittyvä tanssielokuvalaboratorio, jossa jokainen osallistuja on samanvertainen ja yhdessä tutkimassa, tekemässä kokeita elokuvan ja tanssin yhdistämisestä.

Tässä kokeellisessa laboratoriossa joukko elokuvantekijöitä, koreografeja ja tanssijoita saatetaan työryhmiksi ja asetetaan luovuutta vaativien tehtävien eteen. Laboratorion kollektiivinen aivoriihi pyrkii kehittämään tekijöitä ja katsojia kohti seuraavaa koetta, herättämään sen henkiin ja iloitsemaan: “It’s alive!”

Koreografit ja tanssijat saavat mahdollisuuden kokea kameran, leikkauksen ja elokuvan vapauttavat mahdollisuudet samalla kun elokuvantekijät pääsevät tulkitsemaan koreografien ja tanssijoiden kautta kehon liikekieltä ja kerronnallisia mahdollisuuksia.

Kyseessä ei ole perinteinen työpaja-asetelma, jossa on opettaja ja oppilas, vaan kokeilu jossa koko laboratorioryhmä toimii toistensa tukena. Pyrimme siis kollektiivisen kokeiluun ja teokseen koreografi Kati Kallion ja ohjaaja Jukka Rajala-Granstubbin johdolla.

Osallistujilta vaaditaan liikkeellistä tai elokuvallista ideaa teemasta KIIRE.

Finland’s only dance film festival LOIKKA celebrates its fifth annual festival in March 2012. This year, the theme of the festival is breaking boundaries both on and off the screen. The festival features a screening by a nonprofessional citizen jury as well as numerous events such as a seminar, clubs and a dance video jam session. For the first time, audiences will have the opportunity of voting for their favourite film. (more…)
