The Loikka 2015 open call is now closed.
Thank you all for submitting films.
Loikka festival welcomes dance films of any style, length, genre or technique. As in previous years, the majority of our programming will comprise short dance films, but we are also looking to screen a limited number of full-length works.
Previous screenings
There is no restriction on the date of completion of the submitted works, nor on the number of works submitted by an applicant (however, each submitted film is subject to its own entry fee). There is no limitation on submission for films that have been presented at other festivals and/or online. No screening royalties are paid for open call films.
Preview formats
We accept preview screeners only as online video links (YouTube/Vimeo etc). The only exception is for 3D and 4K films, for which screeners should be sent as media files via online transfer.
Timetable (extended)
The last date for entries is October 12th, 2014 at 24:00 Helsinki time.
The results of the open call will be announced by the end of November, and accepted filmmakers should be prepared to send in their final screening files by December 15th, 2014 (we’ll be in touch about the technical details). We prefer to screen digitally from hard disk media file or DCP, but in exceptional circumstances we may consider screening from 35 mm or 16 mm film.
Special technical categories
Loikka strives to constantly push the boundaries of dance film not only artistically, but also technically. For our 2015 festival, we are accepting open call submissions in two special technical categories:
– Stereoscopic 3D dance films
– Dance films available for screening at 4K resolution
For more details, please see the 3D and 4K info page.

The Official Terms and Conditions
We won’t bore you with page after page of cryptic legalese. Loikka is a festival run by working dance artists who believe in fair play and safeguarding your work as carefully as we would our own. However, there are a few things we’d like to bring up:
– Copyright. Submitting a film to Loikka in no way affects any of your intellectual property or moral rights as creator or representative of the work. However, by submitting a work, you affirm that you hold all of the necessary rights and/or permissions to do so, including rights and permissions for still images and music. You agree to indemnify Loikka and its representatives against any third-party claims arising from the failure to secure the abovementioned rights. Translation: If someone’s copyright lawyer comes calling, it’s your derrière, not ours. OK?
– Still images. By submitting still images along with your film, you agree that they may be used freely by Loikka and/or third parties in informational and journalistic contexts related to Loikka dance film festival. We will of course strive to ensure that the film name as well as photographer, director and/or choreographer are credited whenever it is feasible. Submitting a still image link in the entry form is not mandatory, but if we don’t have a still image from you and your film is selected, we reserve the right to pull a frame of our choosing from your preview video.
– Trailer excerpts. By submitting a film, you agree that if the film is accepted for screening, short excerpts of it (selected by the festival staff) may be used in trailers or other video materials promoting Loikka festival. You may opt out of this if you prefer.
– Partner festival screenings. Loikka collaborates with numerous film and dance festivals both in Finland and worldwide, and we are regularly asked to curate dance film screenings. When submitting your film to Loikka, you can specify if you would like to have your film and its supporting materials available for screening at Loikka’s partner festivals for a period of up to two years. There is no additional entry fee for this service; however, no royalties or other financial compensation will be paid from these additional screenings either. You may opt out of this if you wish.
– Jury decisions. The open call selections are made by Loikka’s artistic director with support from a consulting team of dance and film practitioners. All decisions are final and non-appealable. We promise to do our best, but that’s just the way it is. With the exception of your rights set out above, we also reserve the right to make any changes to the festival’s programming or other arrangements at any time.
– Media and shipping. Entry materials and media will not be returned, with the exception of hard drives and memory cards. All shipments of media, drives and other materials are fully at the applicant’s risk.
2. Pay the entry fee
The entry fee for open call submissions for the 2015 Loikka festival is 35 EUR / 40 USD per film, with the following two exceptions:
– For stereoscopic 3D dance films, there is no entry fee.
