It has been said that the slowest way for two people to find mutual understanding is through talking about what is true. The fastest is through dance. When looking at two people dance together, we are looking at the understanding between them.
On sanottu, että hitain keino kahden ihmisen väliseen ymmärrykseen on keskustelu totuudesta. Nopein on tanssi. Kun katsomme kahden ihmisen tanssia, katsomme ymmärrystä, joka heidän välillään vallitsee.
Pelkistetysti ja kauniisti tämä ilmenee norjalaisessa elokuvassa he&she, jossa mies ja nainen jakavat asunnon ja elämänsä. Kehoon liittyvät tunnetilat eivät ole verbaalisia, ennemmin ne kytkevät ruumiin ja tietoisuuden toisiinsa, todellisuuteen. Kun se tapahtuu kahden ihmisen kesken, siitä tulee heidän totuutensa.
Kahden ihmisen välistä tanssia katsomalla tunnemme, mitä he merkitsevät toisilleen. Tässä piilee tanssin kyky luoda kauneutta.
Elokuvallisella tavalla ihmisten välistä ymmärrystä kuvaa Objects in mirror are closer than they appear, jossa meksikolainen flamenco ja suomalainen maaseutu kytkeytyvät toisiinsa. Jukka Rajalan muotokuvassa Abraham Lezama Juarez löytää identiteettinsä tanssista. Elinympäristö muuttuu rakkauden myötä, mutta todellisuus saa samaistumispisteensä tanssin kautta.
Tanssi kykenee kuvaamaan inhimillistä suuruutta hämmästyttävän vähäeleisesti. Voisi sanoa, että tanssin myötä se siirtyy meihin.

It has been said that the slowest way for two people to find mutual understanding is through talking about what is true. The fastest is through dance. When looking at two people dance together, we are looking at the understanding between them.
This is captured in a plain and beautiful way in he&she, a Norwegian film of a man and a woman sharing a flat and their lives together. The emotions in the body are not expressed verbally, but rather they are something that connect the body and the consciousness to one another – and to reality. When two people share this experience, it becomes their truth.
By looking at two people dance, we can sense what they mean to each other. And therein lies the ability of dance to create beauty.
A cinematic examination of the same topic – mutual understanding between people – is Objects in mirror are closer than they appear, a film that brings together Mexican flamenco and the Finnish countryside. Directed by Jukka Rajala, it portrays Abraham Lezama Juarez and his journey to find his own identity through dance. Love takes him to new surroundings, but dance provides a common touchpoint through which to relate to reality.
There is something astonishingly bare in the way dance can convey human greatness. It is as if the act of dancing also reflects this greatness onto us.
