Loikka festival’s Citizen Jury workshop gathered once more a group of people together and offered a chance to have an impact on the dance film selection that will be presented on screen. The screening is curated from viewers to audience. It is a great way to get to know dance film especially if you are unfamiliar to the genre.
The participants’ assignment was to curate a screening suitable for families. With the guidance of dance artist Kimmo Alakunnas, the group curated a screening that will be presented both at Maunula community centre and Loikka festival.
Alakunnas tells that this year’s jury was culturally more oriented than the previous years. The members of the jury had knowledge and experience from culture, dance and theater either from their work or hobbies. According to Alakunnas the jury members’ own taste meant more than technical matters when they were selecting their favourite films. The jury members found that conversation with each other was extremely important when evaluating the films.
According to jury member Katariina Jumppanen, the films of the screening guide the viewer to observe life more comprehensively because of the lack of words. One significant matter in her selections was how the film passes on the message and body language to the viewer. Other jury member, Leena Savolainen, payed attention to stories, atmosphere, the role of the camera and the insights of body and picture.
Chimera is inspired by a creature from the Greek mythology. The creature Chimera has a head of a lion and a body of a goat. In the film, the choreography and personally set pictures recreate the fire-breathing and unpredictable creature. Bhairava is a manifestation of the dancing Hindu deity Shiva. The dance that promises annihilation takes place in historical Hampi, India.
Work and Tammi take the viewer to very Finnish atmospheres. Experimental dance film Work ponders are the works of a dancer and a hardworking ant that different after all. In Tammi a young boy and an adult man meet and learn from each other. Solid oaktree bounds together the past and the present.
Noste and Approaching the Puddle play with water. Noste examines if it’s possible to express oneself in quite exceptional circumstances. Gorgeous colours of blue and green nail the viewer’s eye to the dancing character under the water. In Approaching the Puddle a woman dances at puddles in her yellow rubber boots. Will the boots get wet or not?
In Silent Places five strangers meet up on an unfertile ground. The relation of choreography and moving camera give the viewer a chance to enjoy the movement of dance comprehensively.
Loikka organised the Citizen Jury workshop in collaboration with Maunula community centre. Maunula community centre supports the local residents’ wishes of having a comfortable meeting place that is at the same time cultural, experiencing, working and learning space with a cafeteria. The community centre and its standard of activities enhance the communality, social integration and citizen activity of the area.
