Image Embodied takes the viewer to the interface of body and mind, exploring each other’s intersections; is selfhood something other than an entity bound into a body? Can the mind flow freely to spaces where the body cannot reach?
In the films The Place and Cella these thematics are addressed by looking at the relationship between human and nature. Having a sense of one’s body is sought out by sinking toes into swamp and by touching the air with fingertips. A piece of mind is also looked for in finding harmony with the surrounding world and noticing similarities in other people.
The calm atmosphere and the tempo breathing along with the nature is pierced with Sounds of Grey, a film in which the body skitters about restlessly. The mind is trying to break free from the norms of everyday life and to find connection with another person. In Humallun hurmiosta, a music video for the band Sirja & Konfuusio, the stammering movement resonates the hesitation of whether the body is led by the mind or the other way around.
In Happy Hour and Distance Among Us, at first the surrounding walls seem to prevent a person from moving freely, and yet, maybe it is us restricting ourselves by drawing lines between each other.
Tango Brasiliero moves accross space and time when the images added into 1930s film clips create a new version of the past. Särö, on the other hand, depicts a human life as a whole in which memories are not only carried on as memories but also as physical emotions. Vanitas also reflects the passing of time is also reflected in the portrayal of body and skin turning from smooth to wrinkled.
